Two Sisters

Two sisters stood at the edge of black water.

‘We should go in!’ The smaller tugged at the taller’s hand. ‘I bet there’s a whole world in there.’

But the taller could imagine only inky darkness and pale hands reaching from the depths.

Her sister tore free.

‘No!’

She dove after her.

Darkness like ink. Pale hands reached for her.

‘Look!’ The smaller smiled, gills flexing as she took the taller’s hand. City lights bloomed below. ‘A whole world.’
